Q&A

Chris asked: a changed man..chris.. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/100505&sportCat=nba

I haven't been to a game at Staples, so I don't have any comments about the atmosphere and whatnot, but this is my favorite part of the article:

"When Kobe manages the game, picks his spots and pounds the ball down low to his big guys, they are nearly unbeatable. Everything hinges on No. 24. He's the most competitive guy in the league, but he also wants to be the hero of every game, and sometimes, you can't be both."

That's exactly what I was trying to say during the Thunder series. Simmons just did a better job of articulating it.

Anonymous asked: Jason Bay overrated?

Yes.

Anonymous asked: how long until eric byrnes is on knbr?

I would love to see him sign on with KNBR to co-host Sportsphone 680 with FP Santangelo. I doubt Byrnes would do it because of the late time slot, but it would be pure comedy. Ideally, I would love it if he took Ralph Barbieri's spot so he could co-host with Tolbert, but we both know this isn't going to happen. He's already made his interview rounds on pretty much every KNBR show and he did the pregame show on CSN for the Giants today, so it's only a matter of time until he gets a permanent gig somewhere in the media. I look forward to it.

Brad asked: How 'bout good 'ol Kentucky Fried Lewis...? FdotLew gettin it done in Toronto... -Brad

I'm happy for K-Fred. Maybe he just needed a change of scenery to get going again. I don't know how he's been defensively, but the offensive numbers look pretty solid. Hopefully he has a year like he did in '08. It's interesting that if Rowand got hit in the face a week earlier or if DeRosa pulled his hammy a week earlier, Freddy would probably still be a Giant, and it looks like they could use him right now with DeRosa probably out for an extended period of time with the wrist injury.

Anonymous asked: do you think the padres are legit?

If their pitching keeps it up, I don't see why not. Their team ERA is around 2.73. They're going to be in a position to win a lot of games with a staff like that.

Chris asked: two girls at todays game were wearing "fisher lied" shirts and booed him all series. They feel betrayed...your thought? Keep in mind Tatums doctors were in NY and LA, so Larry Miller knew the lakers were an option. also, he left 8 million over three years in Utah after signing with the lakers for 3 years 14mil. Leaving 8 mil should prove he put Tatum's health first. Living in LA is wonderful but not 8 million wonderful.

I don't get what the big deal is. Betrayed is something you feel when somebody that actually matters does something to hurt you. I have no idea why Jazz fans would feel this way. If anything, Fisher helped them. He still had 22 million left on his deal (one of Chris Mullin's brilliant moves early in his tenure) and he didn't fit in with the team. He made too much money to be D-Will's backup. Sloan tried him at the two, and that didn't work either. If Fisher was still on the Jazz, I doubt Paul Millsap would be. If I was Larry Miller (RIP), I would've let Fisher out of his contract too.

Who knows if Fisher used his daughter's health to go to back to LA. (which would be ironic considering he has a book about character) It was probably beneficial for both parties anyways. In my opinion, this is a non-issue if the Lakers didn't win the title last year and didn't sweep the Jazz out of the playoffs this year. As a Warriors fan, I was glad when they showed Fisher the door and got nothing in return. Jazz fans should feel the same way.

Steve asked: Gotta ask the question man...what do you think about Griffey falling asleep in the clubhouse during a pinch hit opportunity? -Steve

If true, it makes me sad. It makes me sad to see one of the best players of this generation, and my favorite athlete of all time, at the end of the road. He's done. I was hoping that with offseason knee surgery he would regain some of his power and hit for a higher average than last season, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. 630 home runs, 10 Gold Gloves, and an MVP. It's been a hell of a career.

As for whether or not the Mariners cut him, I doubt it. He's the best player in franchise history. He was brought in to sell tickets and merchandise, and that's exactly what he's going to do. There are still four promotions involving Griffey including two bobbleheads so I don't think he's going anywhere.

I'm depressed just typing this. I think I'm going to rock my Griffey authentic and kicks tomorrow.

Bullets

  • Astonishing statistic: Matt LaPorta has 1 RBI in 67 ABs
  • More astonishing statistic: Corey Maggette had 4 blocks last season. He has had a single digit block total in 5 out of the last 6 seasons.
  • Breaking Bad is my favorite current TV show. The Wire is my favorite of all time.
  • I think the show Basketball Wives is hilarious.
  • Good question posed by my brother: Jason Heyward or Justin Upton? I'm leaning one way, but would like to hear your guys' thoughts.
  • Congratulations to Kevin Durant for making to to the All-NBA First Team.
  • Congratulations to Thabo Sefolosha for making it to the All-Defensive Second Team. Very well deserved. Now he needs to learn how to hit a jumper.
  • Who would've thought that Barry Zito would have more wins and a lower ERA than Tim Lincecum through six starts? Good for him.
  • Don't look now, but the Giants have the best record in the National League.
  • Dodgers fans: last place, how does it feel?
  • I bought a shirt at J. Crew for $60. I went to the outlets in Vacaville and saw the same shirt for $28. I love the outlets. They had a 15% student discount at the J. Crew outlet too!
  • I've been asked to do top 5 lists for various things. I might do that. Give me some good ideas and I'll compile lists.
