Just call me Penny, cuz I'm back!

It's been a couple months, but I am officially back! I hope you guys didn't miss reading my writing too much. Haha just kidding.

So what has changed? Well I still haven't bought a Tim Lincecum jersey, but it's only a matter of time though until FRANCHISE 55 will be represented on my back.

Let's see...what else. I haven't written anything about the J-Rich trade to the Bobcats and honestly, I don't think I ever will. It was the closest I've ever been to crying about a basketball trade and I'll just leave it at that.

I'm back in Davis taking summer school. I'm taking Sports in American Society and Sociology. The sports class is interesting, but I disagree with pretty much everything my professor says. Although she teaches the class, I don't feel like she is very knowledgeable about sports. In the first few days of class, here are a few of the matters we disagree on.

1. Barry Bonds. Of course I am biased about Bonds, but she makes her opinion about Bonds by what she reads. I feel like she read an article out of Sports Illustrated and just spit it back out at us. Dude, form some opinions of your own. Just because you read "Game of Shadows" doesn't make you an expert on Bonds' career.

2. A superstar's stats wouldn't be as good without a good team. She brought up Michael Jordan and how his stats wouldn't have been as good if it weren't for Pippen,...and then she ran out of other names. One, know something about the Bulls before bringing them up. Two, I think a superstar's stats would be BETTER if he was on a terrible team.

I raised my hand, which I very rarely do, and brought up Kobe Bryant. The Lakers won 3 championships when Kobe teamed up with Shaq, but Kobe never averaged 30 points per game and never won a scoring title until Shaq was traded to Miami. So according to her theory, I guess Smush Parker is better than Shaq. Hey, Kobe never averaged 35 with Shaq so Smush Parker must be the reason for the scoring increase.

3. NBA Salaries. My professor was trying to make the point that people think that NBA players are paid more than what they actually make. She says that everyone looks at the average salary instead of what we "should" be looking at, the median salary. She said that the average was around 15 million per year, but the median is around $200,000. 15 million. Wow. From what I just looked up, there are 12 players that make 15+ million per year out of about 360 players, which is 3% of the league. Um ok? For that to work out the other 348 players must be getting paid with honey roasted peanuts. Damn I love those. Haha.

Her point about the median salary is even worse. If the median salary is $200,000 then exactly half the players make more than that and the other half make less than that. According to the collective bargaining agreement, the NBA minimum for a rookie is $412,718. Hmm. At least some people make 15 million per year, but NOBODY makes 200k.

4. Sexist Ideals. "Why are there no professional teams with pink as their color?" Uh...the better question is WHY would a team have pink as their color. Something tells me that Shawne Merriman in a pink Chargers jersey doesn't strike fear in quarter backs around the league. I understand that there might be some discrimination against women in sports, but come on. Pink? You've got to be kidding me.

Whatever though. At least the class sparks some interest and makes me want to participate a little bit. Sociology? Well, the same can't be said about that class.
