I do think it was a fair deal. The Twins needed Mauer to stay. Hell, baseball needed him to stay. He is to the Twins what Jeter is to New York, what Lincecum is to San Francisco. They couldn't let the hometown kid walk. I've been reading that the Twins aren't really a small market team, but more of a mid market team so it's kind of a misconception that they can't afford this type of contract. Also. they'll have increased revenue with the opening of Target Field. I think the bottom line is maybe they overpaid a little, which is debatable, but it beats the price of letting him walk
